Land Rover Defender Car Review

The Land Rover Defender has been around in various guises since 1948. The original version was simply called a Land Rover; the word ‘Defender’ didn’t appear until 1991. It doesn’t really matter what you call it because this serious all-wheel drive off-road vehicle is an icon.

Of course, every Defender will spend most of its life either in town traffic or on the open road, however, the outgoing model was never really suited to fast motorway work or long holiday trips. That is where this brand new Defender really thrives.

If you want to buy one. Prepare to wait at least several months but if you subscribe today a Land Rover Defender could be parked in your garage in a few days!

We’ve got the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE long wheelbase version powered by a 3.0 litre diesel engine. Power goes via an 8-speed auto ‘box and there’s all-wheel drive…naturally. Land Rover reckon you’ll get 32mpg which, bearing in mind that this is a beast of a vehicle, it’s pretty good going.

The Defender is hugely satisfying to drive…which is something you’d never say about the old model.  Air suspension means you always get a comfortable ride but can also dial in a sporty mode. You get a 3D surround camera which means parking is a doddle. There’s also satellite navigation, air con, DAB radio, LED headlights, privacy glass, powered and heated front seats and a host of driving assistance gadgets.

The interior is really comfy and super stylish. Owners of the old Defender won’t recognise a thing.

The latest Defender is a revelation. It manages to stay faithful to the previous model in terms of off-road ability, but is now bang up to date. It merges city chic with the ability to get down and dirty. It will still shrug off the worst that the British weather can throw at it and go places where a mountain goat would think twice, however it will look equally at home outside your local theatre or favourite restaurant.

The Defender has gone up another level!
