Returning your vehicle: end of contract and fair wear and tear

When your vehicle agreement is coming to an end, here's what to expect — how to request a return, what happens next, and how your vehicle's condition is assessed

How to request a return

You can request to return your vehicle at any time from your Wagonex account:

    • Log in to your account and go to your profile
    • Select 'Current vehicles'
    • Choose 'Return vehicle' and follow the steps

Once you've submitted your request, your vehicle supplier will be notified and will contact you directly to arrange collection.

If you change your mind after requesting a return, you can cancel the request from the same 'Current vehicles' section in your profile.

What happens next

Your vehicle supplier handles the collection and return process directly, including confirming a collection date and inspecting the vehicle on return. If you have any questions about timing or logistics once a supplier is involved, they'll be able to help — it's best to go straight to them at this stage.

Fair wear and tear

When your vehicle is returned, it's checked against the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) Fair Wear and Tear guidelines — the industry standard used across the vehicle leasing and rental sector to assess a vehicle's condition at the end of an agreement.

In simple terms, fair wear and tear covers the ordinary, gradual deterioration that happens through normal use — things like minor scuffs from everyday driving. It doesn't cover damage caused by a specific incident, such as a collision, harsh treatment, or neglect.

You're responsible for any damage or deterioration beyond fair wear and tear from the date your vehicle is delivered to the date it's returned or collected.

A few things worth doing before your vehicle goes back:

    • Wash the vehicle so any damage is clearly visible during inspection
    • Check for scratches, chips, or worn tyres, and get minor issues repaired in advance where possible — this is often cheaper than having it flagged at inspection
    • Make sure all keys, service books, and accessories are returned with the vehicle
    • If you have an electric or hybrid vehicle, make sure the charging cable is returned undamaged

For full details on what's assessed and how, you can refer to the official BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear guidance.

Your deposit

Any refundable deposit is returned once your vehicle has been returned and checked for damage. If you haven't received your deposit and think you should have, your vehicle supplier will be able to give you an update — their contact details are available on your profile.

Questions about your return?

Once a return has been requested, your vehicle supplier is best placed to help with collection dates, inspection outcomes, or any charges relating to the condition of the vehicle. If you're not sure who your supplier is, you'll find their contact details on your Wagonex profile.

For anything else, you can reach us at help@wagonex.com or on 02030 020 976.
