Volvo is now a premium brand manufacturer. Their cars are loaded with safety kits, well equipped, comfortable and good to drive. There’s a serious sense of quality throughout their product range.

Safety has always been a keyword for Volvo. To be honest, if that’s your number one priority, don’t bother to read any further…get a Volvo. The daddy of them all is this one, the XC60. When it was launched it was the safest car the European authorities had ever tested.

This one is the T6 Recharge PHEV. You can charge the battery at home, work or at the shops and then drive for up to 32 miles using electric power only. The 2.0-litre petrol engine will only burst into life when you run low on battery power or if you need extra oomph. On longer journeys, the engine and battery-driven electric motor work in tandem. Volvo reckons around 100mpg overall but this is only if you can run for most of the time on battery power alone….which is unlikely. However, you should get close to 50mpg in any case which, bearing in mind the size of the Volvo XC60, is pretty good.

Power goes via all-wheel drive transmission and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Our XC60 PHEV looks fantastic. It has the R-Design styling package which gives a sporty exterior and smart interior with terrific heated front sports seats. You also get front and rear parking sensors, air-con, rearview camera, privacy glass, DAB radio, Bluetooth and a powered tailgate.

In a nutshell, the Volvo XC60 is safe, economical, comfortable, oozes quality, is stacked with standard equipment and is good to drive.
