Subaru Outback Review | A Comprehensive Review by Wagonex

Subarus are said to be popular with the huntin’, shootin’, fishin’ brigade because they’re good to drive in normal road conditions but can also mix it up when things get a bit tricky.

In other words, if you need a car that has excellent on-road manners yet can scramble over muddy fields, pull a horse box across wet grass, or reverse a boat into a lake, but also look good outside your favourite restaurant or on your drive, then you will love the Subaru Outback. If you live in an area where wintry roads don’t get gritted, the Outback will be extremely welcome. 

The Subaru Outback’s engine is a 2.5 litre 175bhp petrol unit. 0-60mph takes around 10 seconds; top speed is in the region of 123mph. Power goes via an automatic gearbox. As for economy, Subaru reckons you’ll manage 33 mpg. All-wheel drive is a standard fitment. 

Have you ever listened closely to a Subaru when it goes past? They have an instantly recognisable sound because they use a Boxer engine. Instead of the pistons going up and down, they move from side to side. We reckon they sound great. 

Here at Wagonex, our partners have gone for the SE Lineartronic Outback, which is well equipped with kit like sat nav, heated front seats, leather upholstery, air con, powered windows and mirrors, reversing camera, cruise control, Bluetooth and USB connection, auto and heated wipers, auto lights, and a stack of safety gear including a really handy gadget called X-Mode. As cool as it sounds, just press the button and, on steep inclines, the electronics will control the engine speed, brakes, gearbox, and the 4x4 system which detects if one or more wheels are starting to lose grip.

The Outback is extremely comfy with plenty of room for five adults. The boot will easily cope with a family holiday. It’s very easy to use the word ‘rugged’ when referring to the Outback due to the fact that it will cope with rutted tracks and soggy ground, but it could also be an excellent estate car which need never see a soggy field. Most won’t. 

As an all-round estate, the Subaru Outback is a great choice. No matter what life has round the corner.
